Meet the Community is our new series celebrating the people who make Citz what it is.
First up is movement director and somatic practitioner Imogen Knight, a treasured part of our community for the past few years.
Last week saw the culmination of Imogen’s most recent work with us, Nothing more. Nothing less. A dance.
Imogen collaborated with Sound Designer Peter Rice and Cardboard Citizens Members to explore how the freedom of movement and sound can uncover and unlock our connection to ourselves, each other and the world around us.
Can you introduce yourself and your creative practice?
“My name is Imogen Knight and I am a movement director and somatic practitioner. As a movement director, I work across multiple art forms: film, television, theatre, opera, performance art, and music. As a somatic practitioner, I work one-to-one and in group settings.
In both my artistic and therapeutic practice, my focus is to ignite creativity, self-expression, and agency, and my practice leans into where we might find and reclaim ourselves through our movement. I have always been fascinated and inspired by individual and collective movement and expression. I think in my work, my aim is to unearth and encourage truth and authenticity because when it’s there, it’s so powerful and so beautiful to witness.”
Tell us about the workshop series you’ve recently led at Cardboard Citizens
“Through the recent series that I led with Cardboard Citizens I wanted to explore the process of live art, live making. How we can remain open, responsive and authentic to the given moment.
So much of performance is learnt and practised over and over so that the final presentation is a watertight structure and outcome. In this series we explored how we can let go of expectation or narrative and see what happens, letting the piece guide us rather than us imposing ourselves upon it too strongly. The more we practise dropping into ourselves the more we can trust the collective and the fact that we are enough, just as we are.”
