Life By The Throat tells the story of the main character James, as his life goes through encounters with the criminal justice system, poverty, violence and addiction. Writer/performer Eve Steele has based the story on men she has known in her own life. Using humour, music, performance and storytelling, the play gives the audience an insight into James’ life.
Audiences have called Life By The Throat “emotional”, “funny”, and “moving” – “a phenomenal piece of theatre” and “a powerful performance”. Eve Steele is a highly-skilled and experienced writer/performer, who was a regular on Coronation Street and has appeared on detective drama Scott & Bailey. Eve uses her own life experiences – including her interactions with the criminal justice system – to make theatre that is full of heart and truth.
Cardboard Citizens are the UK’s leading theatre company that makes theatre by and for those with lived experience of homelessness. Cardboard Citizens will host the performance of Life By The Throat, and then our Ambassadors – people with lived experience of homelessness – will lead a creative discussion exploring the themes raised in the play.
Life By The Throat will be touring to London and Manchester.
