Over October – November 2024, Citz facilitated Becoming—a powerful series of artistic workshops designed to support women on their journeys of healing and transformation. This project was in collaboration with  Hackney Domestic Abuse Intervention Service.  Through movement and creative expression, participants got together to process their experiences, reclaim their narratives, and rediscover their inner strength.

The title Becoming captures the essence of this journey: a celebration of transformation, resilience, and self-discovery. Facilitated by Chantelle Dusette and Jessie Huckin, the workshops provided an opportunity for women to reconnect with themselves and one another. A recurring theme throughout the project was nature, symbolizing growth, rebirth, and the ongoing process of change.

This project stands as a powerful reminder of the healing potential of art and the importance of creating spaces where everyone can feel seen, heard, and valued.

Creating Spaces for Healing and Self-Discovery

Facilitator Chantelle Dusette reflected on the unique importance of projects like Becoming:

“These spaces are invaluable. Vulnerable people, especially those at risk, often don’t have access to spaces where they can truly just be free from judgment, safe in their own skin, and empowered to reclaim their stories. While Hackney Council provides vital services, this initiative was distinct because it was art-focused and holistic. The workshops allowed participants to explore their identities through multidisciplinary art, rediscovering their voices and confidence in a nurturing, supportive environment.”

Imagining a New Future

The long-term impact of the project is rooted in how participants envisioned their futures. Chantelle shared how the project encouraged the women to reflect on who they wanted to become:

“We asked participants to imagine their future selves and write a letter from that person. They also created a visual representation of this version of themselves. These exercises provided a ‘north star’—a reminder of their potential and a tool to guide them when they felt lost. Our hope is that everything they’ve gained during this project will continue to grow, helping them trust in their strength and see themselves as the incredible women they always were.”

Celebrating Transformation Through Art

To mark #16DaysOfActivism, the artistic pieces created are now being showcased at Hackney Central Library. This exhibition raises awareness about the ongoing campaign against gender-based violence while highlighting the importance of support services available to those in need.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every participant for their courage, creativity, and contributions to this community. Special thanks to Hackney’s Safer Neighbourhood Board for funding this transformative project.
