About the project 

We’re collaborating with the Almeida Theatre on the third and final part of their Community Play Trilogy, 1000 (Millennia), taking place in early July 2026.  

1000 (Millennia) journeys deep into Islington’s past and far into its future to imagine a mythic borough – an origin story for how we got here and a vision of what might come next.  

We are one of four community groups forming a company of 60+ performers. Our sections of the production will be directed by Artistic Director Chris Sonnex and an Associate Director, and there will be full-company moments directed by the Almeida team as well.  The production will involve acting, singing and movement. 

Project dates and times 

  • Weekly rehearsals at Cardboard Citizens: Thursday 30 April – Thursday 2 July, 2 – 5pm  
  • Monthly rehearsals at the Almeida Theatre: Sunday 17 May, Sunday 21 June, Saturday 4 July, times TBC  
  • Production week at the Almeida Theatre (final rehearsals and performances): Monday 6 July – Saturday 11 July, times TBC  

How to get involved

There are roughly 15 spaces on the project (dependant on the roles in the sections of the production that we are assigned). These will be offered following an audition workshop and our usual process, which considers recent participation with Citz.  

Audition workshops are open to all Members, whether or not they have taken part in previous Almeida projects.

Audition workshop details

The audition workshops are an opportunity to hear more about the project and creatively explore in a supportive environment, you do not need to prepare anything in advance.  

We’ll be looking for:  

  • Creative collaboration – how you work with others  
  • Taking direction – how you respond to creative feedback  
  • Confidence in performing – how comfortable you are performing in front of an audience  

Our goal is to build a company that is representative of the Citz community, is able to commit to rehearsals and performances, and will find the experience positive and enriching at this stage in their lives.  

Audition workshop dates and times

  • Monday 30 March – 2-5pm   
  • Tuesday 31 March – 2-5pm   
  • Wednesday 1 April – 6-9pm (18-30 years old only)  

You only need to attend one audition workshop.  

Important Information 

We know some of you may be interested in Citz Theatre Makers in partnership with the Almeida Theatre and Movement & Performance R&D with Imogen Knight.  

Since Members can’t take part in both, when you click the ‘Book Now’ button you will be asked to share your order of preference which we will take into account when making decisions. You only need to complete this form once. 

As spaces are limited, we may not be able to offer everyone a place on either project. However, we will provide feedback on auditions for Citz Theatre Makers in partnership with the Almeida Theatre and highlight other opportunities coming up later this year.
